Name numerology assigns a number to each letter, then adds selected letters to create symbolic values. In the common Pythagorean system, the alphabet cycles through 1 to 9. The method can use every letter, vowels only, or consonants only depending on the question.
The calculation is simple, but consistency matters. Use the same alphabet chart, the complete birth name, and a documented rule for Y or transliteration. Different name numbers describe different layers and should not be blended into one vague result.

Which name should you use?
For core calculations, most modern Pythagorean numerologists use the complete name recorded at birth, including middle names. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes, and honorifics receive no value. Record exactly which name you used so the arithmetic can be reproduced.
A current name, married name, pen name, or nickname can be calculated as a secondary expression associated with that context. It does not erase the birth-name calculation. Compare the two rather than deciding one is metaphysically “real.”
A short whole-name example

How to handle Y
Y always has Pythagorean value 7, but its category depends on sound. Count it with vowels when it supplies the vowel sound in its syllable, as in Lynn. Count it with consonants when it begins a syllable with a “y” sound, as in Yolanda.
Reduction and master numbers
Add letter values, keep auditable subtotals, and reduce the final result by adding its digits. Many systems preserve 11, 22, and 33 at the final stage, written with their base values as 11/2, 22/4, and 33/6. Master Numbers are not rankings.
Pythagorean versus Chaldean numerology
Chaldean numerology assigns letters by a different sequence and usually works with 1 through 8. Results cannot be mixed with Pythagorean calculations. If two sources disagree, first check whether they use different systems rather than assuming one arithmetic result is wrong.
Names outside the Latin alphabet
There is no universal Pythagorean conversion for every writing system. A transliterated name can be calculated, but transliteration choices may change the result. State the standard or spelling used and avoid presenting it as the only valid representation of the original name.
What name numerology can and cannot show
Name numbers can organize reflection around expression, motivation, and presentation. They cannot establish a person’s identity, talent, morality, culture, or future. A name change can alter the calculation without proving that personality or destiny has changed.
Common calculation mistakes
Common errors include omitting middle names, skipping repeated letters, mixing systems, reducing too early, and treating Y automatically as a vowel. Writing each letter and subtotal makes the result easy to audit.
Numerology is a symbolic tradition, not a scientifically validated personality or forecasting method. Use name numerology as a reflection prompt, not as proof of compatibility, aptitude, health, or the correct spelling of someone’s identity.
