A Personal Year number is a numerology cycle calculated from your birth month, birth day, and the year you want to examine. It changes annually and moves through a sequence from 1 to 9. After a 9 year, the cycle begins again with 1, but the new cycle unfolds in a different stage of your actual life.

How to calculate your Personal Year number
- Reduce your birth month
Use the month number. January is 1 and December is 12, which reduces to 3 because 1 + 2 = 3.
- Reduce your birth day
Add the digits until one number remains. The 14th becomes 1 + 4 = 5. The 29th becomes 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2 for this method.
- Reduce the calendar year
Add every digit of the year. For 2026, 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
- Add the three results
Combine the reduced month, day, and year. Reduce the total again until you reach a Personal Year number from 1 to 9.
Example: August 14 during 2026
Birth month: August = 8
Birth day: 14 = 1 + 4 = 5
Calendar year: 2026 = 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 = 1

Does your Personal Year begin in January or on your birthday?
Two timing conventions are common. The calendar-year method changes the number on January 1. Another school treats the birthday as the main transition point, sometimes describing the months before the birthday as a gradual handover from the previous number. This difference explains why two calculators may disagree even when their arithmetic is correct.

You may still notice a transition around your birthday because birthdays naturally invite review and because lived changes rarely occur on a perfectly clean numerical boundary. What about master numbers 11 and 22?
Some numerologists preserve 11 or 22 when they appear in a Personal Year calculation and interpret them as intensified versions of 2 or 4. Other systems reduce every Personal Year to 1 through 9 because the method is built around a nine-year sequence. Both conventions appear in contemporary numerology.
This guide uses 1 through 9 so the cycle remains consistent. If you track master-number undertones, write the result as 11/2 or 22/4 rather than treating it as unrelated to the base number. Personal Year versus Life Path number
