The Lot of Spirit in astrology, also called the Lot of Daimon, is one of the principal Hellenistic lots. It is not a planet or visible object. It is a zodiacal point calculated from the Ascendant and the distance between the Sun and Moon, with the order commonly reversed between day and night charts.

Spirit is often contrasted with the Part or Lot of Fortune. Fortune is commonly associated with circumstances that happen through the body, material conditions, and events outside direct control. Spirit emphasizes intention, choice, action, vocation, and the use of one's capacities. This contrast is interpretive, not absolute, and a responsible calculation states the sect rule, zodiac, house system, and source before drawing conclusions.

Why Spirit is called a lot

A lot is produced by measuring an arc between two chart points and projecting that distance from the Ascendant. Older translations may call these points Arabic Parts, but many important lots are documented in Greek astrological texts centuries before medieval Arabic transmission. The word part can also sound like a physical object. Lot of Spirit or Lot of Daimon more clearly signals a calculated relationship inside a specific tradition.

How to calculate the Lot of Spirit

1. Convert to longitude

   Write the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon as positions from 0 to less than 360 degrees.

2. Determine sect

   For the common rule, a Sun above the local horizon makes a day chart and a Sun below it makes a night chart.

3. Apply one formula

   Use Ascendant + Sun - Moon by day or Ascendant + Moon - Sun by night.

4. Normalize the result

   Add or subtract 360 until the answer lies from 0 to less than 360 degrees.

5. Convert back to a sign

   Divide by 30 to identify the sign and degree, preserving minutes when available.

A worked calculation example

Suppose a day chart has the Ascendant at 100 degrees, the Sun at 220 degrees, and the Moon at 170 degrees. The common day formula gives 100 + 220 - 170 = 150 degrees, which is 0 degrees Virgo in a tropical zodiac. If the same longitudes belonged to a night chart under the reversing convention, the order would be 100 + 170 - 220 = 50 degrees, or 20 degrees Taurus. This example demonstrates the arithmetic only; interpretation requires the complete chart and declared conventions.

Day and night chart conventions

Many traditional practitioners reverse the solar and lunar order by sect, but not every software package, translation, or modern school uses the same convention. A planet exactly on the horizon can also create a sect judgment that depends on calculation precision or source rules. Do not repair a surprising answer by changing the formula silently. Record whether sect reversal was used, how the horizon was calculated, and which source or software setting produced the point.

Lot of Spirit versus Lot of Fortune

In the common reversing formulas, Spirit and Fortune use opposite Sun-Moon arcs. The distinction is often summarized as intentional activity for Spirit and embodied or circumstantial experience for Fortune. That summary is useful but incomplete. Traditional techniques also examine their rulers, houses, aspects, derived places, time-lord systems, and relationships with each other. Neither lot is automatically fortunate or unfortunate, and neither replaces the rest of the natal chart.

How to interpret the sign and house

The sign can describe the style, resources, and constraints through which intentional action is organized. The house can locate a field where chosen effort becomes visible. A Lot of Spirit in the third house, for example, may focus inquiry on learning, writing, siblings, or local networks, but it does not guarantee a writing career. House placement is especially sensitive to birth time, Ascendant accuracy, and the selected house system.

It cannot identify one inevitable profession, prove talent, or overrule education, access, disability, labor markets, family duties, and personal preference. Common calculation mistakes

Frequent errors include mixing sign degrees with absolute longitude, reversing the subtraction accidentally, forgetting to normalize a negative result, using the Fortune formula for Spirit, assuming sect from clock time rather than the local horizon, and copying software output without its settings. Rounding the Ascendant or luminaries can move the lot across a sign, bound, or house cusp. Save the raw longitudes and formula so another reader can reproduce the result.
