The Part of Fortune in astrology, also called Fortuna, is an Arabic Part or Lot. It is not a planet or asteroid. Its zodiac degree is calculated from the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon, with traditional formulas reversing the solar and lunar order for day and night charts.
Fortune does not promise wealth, fame, or effortless luck. In natal interpretation it can describe the meeting point between the body and environment, material circumstances, and forms of activity that support coherence. The sign, house, ruler, and close contacts matter more than a generic list of lucky signs.

The Part of Fortune uses the relationship among the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon. Traditional authors associated it with the body, livelihood, property, circumstance, and what befalls a person. Modern astrologers may add fulfillment or ease, but the older framework is broader than good luck.

Some modern software uses the day formula for every chart, so two calculators can disagree without either having a data-entry error. A worked calculation
Convert each position to absolute zodiac longitude, beginning Aries at 0 degrees, Taurus at 30, Gemini at 60, and so on. Suppose a day chart has an Ascendant at 10 degrees Taurus, a Moon at 20 degrees Leo, and a Sun at 5 degrees Cancer. Their longitudes are 40, 140, and 95 degrees. The day formula gives 40 + 140 - 95 = 85 degrees, which is 25 degrees Gemini. If a result is below 0, add 360; if it is 360 or higher, subtract 360 until it falls within the circle.

This is a starting grammar. The sign ruler and its condition show whether that style has practical support.

The house locates the field where circumstances and effort meet. The ruler can describe how the topic is managed and where resources or complications originate. For example, Fortune in a Mercury-ruled sign directs attention to Mercury's condition. A strong slogan about Gemini Fortune is less informative than the actual Mercury in that chart.
Aspects and conjunctions
Many practitioners prioritize close conjunctions to Fortune, especially from planets or angles. A planet joined to the Lot may become directly involved in livelihood, bodily circumstances, or the way external conditions unfold. Other aspects can be considered, but generous orbs make a calculated point appear connected to nearly everything. Use a consistent, conservative orb and do not let one contact replace the planet's natal condition.

Fortune near the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or Imum Coeli may become more visible in the chart's angular structure. The exact claim depends on degree accuracy. An uncertain birth time can move both the Lot and the angles, so a seemingly exact conjunction may disappear after rectification. A transit to Fortune is not a standalone promise of money or a warning of loss. Define the technique and time frame, check the natal promise and current circumstances, and look for repeated testimony rather than treating one passing contact as an event generator.
Does birth time matter?
Yes. The Ascendant is part of the formula and can move roughly one zodiac degree every few minutes, with variation by latitude and sign. A small time error shifts Fortune; a larger one can change its sign, house, or angular contacts. If the time is unknown, software may still display a point based on a default noon chart, but that position should not be interpreted as personal.

The Lot of Spirit uses the complementary solar-lunar formula and is often associated with intention, action, vocation, or what a person deliberately pursues. Fortune is more closely linked with body and circumstance. The pair can enrich interpretation, but they should not be merged into a simple luck-versus-career binary.
