The Alcocoden is a method-dependent planetary role in later traditional astrology, selected through dignity and relationship to the Hyleg. It belongs to historical study, not responsible lifespan prediction.
Alcocoden in astrology is a later traditional term for a planet selected in relation to the Hyleg within some medieval and Renaissance length-of-life procedures. The word derives through Arabic terminology often translated as giver of years. A typical method first establishes a valid Hyleg, then examines planets with specified essential dignity at the Hyleg's degree and tests whether they meet the chosen source's aspect or testimony requirements.
There is no source-free Alcocoden calculation. Dignity tables, scoring rules, aspect conditions, house frameworks, planetary condition, and tie procedures vary. Historical authors also assigned planetary years, additions, and subtractions, but converting those rules into an age or death forecast is unsafe and unsupported. What is the Alcocoden?
The Alcocoden is a relational role, not a planet that can be identified from strength alone. In many reconstructions, the astrologer first selects the Hyleg under a specific authority. The rulers that hold essential dignity at the Hyleg's exact degree are then considered, and the method tests whether a candidate forms the required relationship to the Hyleg. A planet can have a high dignity score and still fail another condition. Some methods can yield a disputed result or no qualifying planet.
Alcocoden versus Hyleg
The Hyleg is the candidate point selected through its own sequence, often from the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Part of Fortune, or prenatal syzygy depending on the text. The Alcocoden is a planet evaluated after that selection. Treating the two as synonyms removes the relationship that the later technique is built around. If two Hyleg methods choose different points, they may produce different dignity rulers and therefore different Alcocoden candidates. The disagreement begins upstream, not at the final label.
Alcocoden versus almuten
An almuten is commonly the planet with the highest declared essential-dignity score at a degree. That score can help rank candidates in some Alcocoden procedures, but the terms are not interchangeable. The scoring table itself must be stated, and a score winner may still need an aspect or testimony to the Hyleg. Ties, reception, and the handling of minor dignities differ across sources. Saying the almuten automatically becomes the Alcocoden hides those additional tests.
Essential dignity at the Hyleg degree
Candidate assessment may involve domicile, exaltation, triplicity, bounds or terms, and face or decan rulers at the Hyleg's exact longitude. A reproducible worksheet records every ruler and the weight assigned under the chosen method. It also states whether triplicity depends on sect and which bounds table is used. Small degree errors can change a bound or face ruler, so birth data, zodiac, and rounding conventions matter. Do not silently switch tables to produce a preferred planet.
Aspect and testimony requirements
Many descriptions require the candidate to aspect or otherwise testify to the Hyleg, but definitions of acceptable relationship and orb are not universal. Some treatments prioritize certain configurations or distinguish bodily conjunction from a ray. A candidate with dignity but no permitted connection may be rejected under one method and retained under another. - Resolve or preserve ambiguity
Apply the source's tie rule if it has one, and document a tie or no result when the evidence remains incomplete.
A worked method audit
Imagine that a selected Hyleg falls at a degree where three planets hold different dignities under your table. You list all three and their declared weights rather than naming the strongest from memory. Next, you calculate each candidate's relationship to the Hyleg using the aspect and orb rules in the same source. Those terms describe an astrological model, not clinical health data. Even a technically careful judgment cannot establish disease, resilience, treatment outcome, or danger. Keep condition notes inside the historical comparison and use medical, actuarial, legal, and safety evidence for real decisions.
Why astrologers get different results
Results can diverge because readers select different Hylegs, translations, dignity weights, triplicity systems, bounds tables, aspect definitions, house systems, or birth times. They may also disagree about whether a tie can be resolved and whether a candidate without the required testimony is eligible.
