Lot of Basis in Astrology: Meaning and Calculation

The Lot of Basis in astrology is built from two other calculated points, the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit. In the convention used here, calculate Fortune and Spirit with sect, measure the shorter separation between them, and project that arc forward from the Ascendant. The result is a zodiacal longitude, not a planet, object, energy, or diagnosis.

Basis is often translated as foundation or support. Later interpreters connect it with bodily footing, subsistence, stability, and the relationship between received circumstance and directed action. Historical sources and modern software do not always agree on names or procedures. This guide states one shorter-arc method and keeps it separate from the Mercury-based Lot of Necessity used elsewhere in this journal.

Vettius Valens describes a basis derived from Fortune and Daimon, another name for Spirit, and the later tradition preserves more than one explanation of the arc. Some instructions say Fortune to Spirit by day and reverse by night; some emphasize the shorter distance that places the result beneath the horizon. Modern calculators may label a Fortune-Spirit result as Basis, Eros, or Necessity depending on the source family. Record the author, translation, software version, zodiac, and house system instead of treating labels as interchangeable.

Calculate Fortune and Spirit first

Determine sect from the Sun's position relative to the local horizon, then convert the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon to continuous longitudes from 0 to less than 360 degrees. Keep unrounded values. Fortune and Spirit mirror the luminary arc around the Ascendant, so an error in birth time, sect, or one prerequisite lot changes Basis as well.

How to calculate the Lot of Basis

1. Record exact longitudes

   Use the same zodiac and coordinate framework for the Ascendant, Fortune, and Spirit.

2. Find the separation

   Subtract one lot from the other, normalize the difference, and compare it with 360 minus that value.

3. Choose the shorter arc

   Use the separation that is 180 degrees or less; do not halve it.

4. Project from the Ascendant

   Add the whole shorter arc in zodiacal order to the Ascendant longitude.

5. Normalize and convert

   Reduce the result to 0 through less than 360 degrees, then convert it to a sign and degree.

Worked Basis calculation

Suppose the Ascendant is 105 degrees, Fortune is 220 degrees, and Spirit is 280 degrees. Their separation is 60 degrees, while the other way around the zodiac is 300 degrees. The shorter arc is therefore 60 degrees. Add it to the Ascendant: 105 + 60 = 165 degrees, which is 15 degrees Virgo in a tropical zodiac. The example demonstrates arithmetic, not a judgment about the person.

The 180-degree geometry check

Because the method adds an arc no larger than 180 degrees, Basis must land within the half of the zodiac immediately following the Ascendant. In a whole-sign framework this is described as the lower six-house hemisphere, though exact horizon geometry and quadrant-house labels require care. A result more than 180 degrees forward from the Ascendant signals that the longer arc, a reversed subtraction, or an inconsistent input was used. This is a calculation check, not an interpretive rule about being hidden.

Read the sign, house, and ruler

The sign provides the lot's ruler and a symbolic style; the house identifies the life area emphasized under the chosen house system. Then judge the ruler by sign, house, sect, essential dignity, aspects, visibility, and actual capacity to act. Basis in the second house, for example, does not promise wealth or poverty. It can focus questions about skills, reserves, pricing, access, maintenance, and what reliably supports daily life.

Basis, Fortune, and Spirit

Fortune traditionally concerns embodiment and circumstances received, while Spirit concerns intention, action, and direction. Basis is calculated from the relationship between them, so it should not replace either prerequisite lot. A useful reading compares all three: what conditions are present, what effort is directed, and what support allows the two to work together. The geometry does not prove that circumstances are chosen or that effort can overcome every structural barrier.

Basis versus the Lot of Necessity

This journal uses the Paulus-style Hermetic Lot of Necessity formed from Fortune and Mercury, reversed by sect. Basis instead uses Fortune and Spirit. Some Valens-based discussions connect Basis with whichever Fortune-Spirit lot falls below the horizon, and some software carries an alternative label. Preserve those historical distinctions, but never paste a Mercury-lot interpretation onto a Fortune-Spirit longitude or claim two formulas agree when they do not.

Common calculation and reading mistakes

Calculation errors include using rounded prerequisite lots, choosing the 300-degree arc when the shorter one is 60, halving the arc, projecting from Fortune instead of the Ascendant, mixing tropical and sidereal positions, or trusting an unlabeled software point. Reading errors include promising permanent stability, treating hardship as a weak foundation, blaming someone for limited access, or using Basis as a substitute for health, housing, or financial evidence.
