Antiscia in Astrology: Meaning and Calculation

Antiscia are zodiac degrees mirrored across the Cancer-Capricorn solstitial axis. Contra-antiscia are the points opposite those mirrors. They are longitude relationships, not declination parallels.

In astrology, an antiscion is the degree that mirrors another degree across the solstitial axis at 0 degrees Cancer and 0 degrees Capricorn. The two positions are equally distant from a solstice point in the tropical zodiac. A contra-antiscion is found directly opposite the antiscion.

The calculation is exact geometry on zodiac longitude. Interpretation is a traditional astrological convention. Keep the original longitude, mirror point, actual separation, zodiac, orb, and timestamp visible. Do not confuse antiscia with parallels and contraparallels, which compare declination north or south of the celestial equator.

What are antiscia in astrology?

Antiscia, singular antiscion, are paired zodiac positions with equal distance from the solstitial axis. Traditional descriptions connect the pair with equal solar light or shadow conditions at corresponding times of year. In chart practice, an astrologer checks whether a planet or angle closely occupies the antiscion of another placement. The relationship is often read as a concealed, indirect, or supportive connection, but it does not replace an ordinary conjunction or establish an event by itself.

Antiscia sign pairs

How to calculate an antiscion by sign and degree

  1. Confirm the zodiac

Use the tropical zodiac for the standard solstitial method and do not mix it with a sidereal chart without stating a different convention.

  2. Find the paired sign

Use the six solstitial sign pairs listed above.

  3. Subtract from 30 degrees

Subtract the source degree and minutes from 30 degrees 00 minutes.

  4. Preserve precision

For 17 degrees 31 minutes, calculate 30 degrees 00 minutes minus 17 degrees 31 minutes, which gives 12 degrees 29 minutes.

  5. Compare the chart body

Measure how far the second body lies from the exact mirror and apply the orb chosen before interpretation.

Worked antiscion example

Mirror 17 degrees 31 minutes Cancer

Cancer pairs with Gemini

30°00′ - 17°31′ = 12°29′

Antiscion: 12°29′ Gemini

A planet near 12°29′ Gemini contacts the antiscion within the declared orb.

The minute subtraction matters. Treating 17 degrees as a whole number first and then attaching 31 minutes would produce the wrong reflected degree. Convert both positions to decimal longitude or arc minutes if that makes the arithmetic easier, then convert the result back to sign, degree, and minute notation.

A longitude formula

If tropical longitude is measured from 0 Aries through 360 degrees, one compact formula is antiscion longitude = (180 degrees - source longitude) modulo 360 degrees. For 40 degrees longitude, which is 10 Taurus, the result is 140 degrees, or 20 Leo. For 260 degrees, which is 20 Sagittarius, the result is 280 degrees, or 10 Capricorn. Software should normalize negative or 360-degree results into the 0 to less-than-360 range.

What are contra-antiscia?

The contra-antiscion of a degree is the point opposite its antiscion. After finding the antiscion, add or subtract 180 degrees and normalize the result. If 10 Taurus has its antiscion at 20 Leo, its contra-antiscion is 20 Aquarius. This is equivalent to reflecting the original position across the Aries-Libra equinoctial axis. Some authors write contrantiscion or contra-antiscion; the calculation should be stated rather than inferred from spelling.

Antiscia, contra-antiscia, aspects, and declination

The Sun has related seasonal geometry at these reflected points, which helps explain historical light and shadow language. Other planets can have latitude and declination that do not match merely because their longitudes form antiscia. Calling every contra-antiscion a contraparallel is therefore incorrect. Calculate each relationship from its own coordinates.

What orb should you use?

Traditional and modern practices vary, but antiscia are commonly treated as degree-specific contacts and usually given a tight orb. Some astrologers require near exactness, while others allow about 1 degree and may use a slightly wider allowance for the Sun or Moon. There is no universal boundary. Record both the chosen maximum and the actual separation. A contact 4 minutes from exact should not be presented as identical to one 58 minutes away.

How antiscia are interpreted in a natal chart

A natal antiscion may be read as an indirect link between two planetary functions that is less immediately visible than a conjunction. Begin with the planets, houses, rulerships, dignity, sect, speed, and ordinary aspects. Then ask whether the mirrored contact adds a repeatable theme. Venus at the antiscion of Saturn cannot by itself prove rejection, loyalty, wealth, artistic discipline, an age-gap relationship, or a fixed attachment style.

Antiscia in horary astrology

Horary astrologers may use antiscia as secondary testimony connecting significators that lack a major applying aspect. The method depends on the horary tradition being used, the radicality and clarity of the question, house assignment, reception, motion, prohibition, collection, translation, and other conditions. An antiscion should not be introduced only after the primary testimonies fail to support a desired judgment.

Antiscia in synastry

In synastry, one person’s planet can fall near the antiscion or contra-antiscion of another person’s planet or angle. Some astrologers read the former as subtle recognition and the latter as concealed polarity. These are symbolic descriptions, not evidence of attraction, consent, compatibility, marriage, betrayal, or a destined bond. Angles and the Moon require reliable birth data, and all contacts should be considered alongside actual relationship behavior.

Antiscia in transits

For transits, calculate the exact mirror of the natal placement and track when the moving body enters the selected orb, reaches exact contact, and leaves. Retrograde motion can produce multiple passes. Keep each date and actual separation. The antiscion contact may occur without an ordinary aspect between the same bodies, and it does not guarantee that a visible event will happen on the exact date.

Why software results can disagree

Differences can come from tropical versus sidereal settings, true versus mean nodes, geocentric versus topocentric positions, rounding, timestamp conversion, whether angles and lots are included, or the contact orb. Some programs list antiscia as calculated points while others list only body-to-body contacts. Compare the raw longitudes first. If the mirror degree differs, inspect the zodiac and arithmetic; if only the contact label differs, inspect the orb.

A reproducible workflow

  1. Export exact longitudes

Keep signs, degrees, minutes, seconds, timestamp, and zodiac setting.

  2. Calculate every mirror

Use the paired-sign subtraction or the normalized longitude formula.

  3. Calculate opposite mirrors

Add 180 degrees to each antiscion when contra-antiscia are part of the method.

  4. Measure separation

Compare the target body with the exact point before applying the orb.

  5. Interpret last

Read the full chart and record outcomes and non-events without upgrading a secondary contact after the fact.

Limits of antiscia interpretation

The reflected longitudes are calculable. Their astrological meaning is interpretive and is not a scientifically validated predictor of personality or events. Antiscia cannot diagnose health, reveal private thoughts, prove identity, establish guilt, guarantee a relationship, or replace medical, legal, financial, or mental health guidance. Use them as disclosed secondary chart factors.
